In the development process of a new product, it always has to undergo multiple revisions to the initial design before it can be truly marketed. Usually, when a product arrives in the hands of a dealer or a customer, there will soon be various feedbacks, believing that it would be better if the product can be modified. So the manufacturer will modify the product based on the opinions collected.
"Revision" is an easier thing to talk about than to do in manufacturing. Even if it is a slight modification in appearance, it is often necessary to remake the mold. The production of the mold is a very costly and time-consuming task. For example, a mold for manufacturing the casing of a normal telephone will cost tens of thousands of yuan to make. What's more serious is that when you are spending money to make a new mold, you don't know if you will be satisfied this time. If you are no longer satisfied, spending money is a trivial matter, and delaying time may mean losing the market.
Although the virtual technology of the computer can display the appearance of the designed product on the screen very realistically, it cannot be compared with the real object no matter how realistic the vision is. Just think about it, just relying on the exquisite pictures of the advertisement, not many people dare to spend money to buy a precious commodity right away. They have to go to the mall in person, touch it with their hands, and fiddle with it before they dare to really make up their minds. Therefore, in the market, seeing is not believing, and you have to touch to be believable.
Buying a product is still the case. If a merchant places an order from the manufacturer in thousands, it is not just a matter of just looking at the computer screen to make up your mind.
Due to the formation of global market integration, competition in the manufacturing industry is fierce, and the length of the product development cycle directly affects the survival of an enterprise. Therefore, there is an objective need for a technology that can directly and quickly convert design data into three-dimensional entities. In this way, not only can the correctness of the design be quickly and intuitively verified, but also the physical model of the future product can be provided to customers, or even only potential customers with intentions, so as to achieve the purpose of quickly occupying the market.
Rapid Prototyping (RP) was born in the United States in 1988 under such a social background, and quickly expanded to Europe and Japan, and was introduced to my country in the early 1990s.
Rapid prototyping technology comprehensively applies various modern technologies to directly and quickly convert computer design data into real objects. Vividly speaking, rapid prototyping technology has realized the so-called dream of "whatever you want to achieve". Rapid prototyping technology has been widely used in rapid conceptual model manufacturing (such as checking whether the designed product looks good or not, trendy and not trendy), rapid test model manufacturing (such as checking whether the designed product is easy to use or not, how good is its performance), Rapid tool manufacturing (direct manufacturing of molds) and rapid functional parts manufacturing (direct manufacturing of parts) and other fields.
